MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 16, 2008

 

Wendy T. called our meeting to order at the Redeemer United Methodist Church at 9:34 a.m. 

 Members Present:                     33 members and 8 guests.

 Hospitality:                               Sally C. introduced two guests Dorothy H. and Helen H.
Lois D. introduced Maxine McA.
Nancy M. introduced two guests Bev H. and Lou B.
Joyce and Jim A. signed in

 Hostesses:                                Mary Ann E., Helen L., Cathy M.

 Minutes:                                   Minutes were distributed by e-mail and approved by the members.

 Treasurer’s Report:                   Alice M. reported our bank balance as $5,325.18.

 Ways and Means:                     Pam W. again raised the need for items and plants.  Wendy T. brought in lemons and a hellebore; all sold very quickly. 

 Unfinished Business:                 

 May Plant Sale – The date for the plant sale is May 3, 2008.  Heidi of Dragonfly has already donated some plants; an e-mail will be sent with dates and directions to Linda M’s house and for volunteers to repot these plants.  Repotting will take place at Linda M’s.  Sign-up sheets will be sent around at the meetings asking for volunteers to help members divide and repot plants as well as for members who need help.  Don’t forget that all plants should be identified.  KRA will again sell pots at the plant sale.  Kay P. and Noel L. are co-chairing the raffle and suggested a silent auction during the plant sale.  We would like to auction artwork so if anyone knows of an artist please forward the names and telephone numbers to Kay and Noel.  Wendy T. asked Kay to come up with an outline for February. 

Chelsea Garden Show, England – May 16th through May 24th – Due to the high cost of this trip, Gwen W. suggested that members make their own travel arrangements.  The land trip is at cost.  Interested members should contact Gwen W.

Holiday Party – A round of applause was given to Nancy M. for again hosting our fun annual holiday party at her lovely house.

New Business:                         

Announcement – Diann K.’s absence has been extended so Mary S. will conduct the February meeting and Annika M. has graciously volunteered to chair the March through June meetings.                                       

 Monthly Meetings –Volunteers are still needed to act as hostesses in addition to Design of the Day and door prizes. 

Clean-up – Beautification of the cemetery was discussed - Sharon N. asked for volunteers around April.  The Public Works department has taken the task of cleaning-up W. Kingston Road.  KGC to help in the spring clean-up in conjunction with KRA – no date has been set.

Aloha Wright Grant – There is a budget of $1500 for 2007/2008 - one grant has been awarded to the David Wolfle Elementary School.  The NK Boys and Girls club would like to take over the green houses that are currently at the middle school.  Dawn V. contacted Fabienne at the Boys and Girls club and gave her information needed to start this process.

Kingston Town Meeting – This will take place the third week in March.  KGC will again host a booth.

Kingston Garden Club Cook Book – Pam W. – no updates but members are encouraged to continue to send in recipes to Kris T.     

Design of the Day:                    Debbie W. brought acorns and pine cones in the bottom of a glass along with cut pine tree branches.

Show and Tell:                          Pam W. brought in pineapple sage and asked when you should trim the plant.

Door Prizes:                             Ann W., Madelynne C.  Two primrose plants (used as table decorations) were also given away as door prizes.

Tip(s) of the Day:                      Elaine J. said that putting (real) corks from wine bottles around the base of plants helps protect plants from freezing weather.  Maxine H. said that she puts them under pots on the deck.   

Next Meeting:                           February 20, 2008.  Topic – Bob Smaus will be the guest speaker – talking about changes in his garden in Southern California.
