KINGSTON GARDEN CLUB
MEETING MINUTES NOVEMBER 14, 2007
Pam W. called our meeting to order at the Redeemer United Methodist Church at 9:00 a.m. Pam W. announced that we would have our guest speaker, Patrick Leuner, give his slideshow presentation before our business meeting. Nancy M. gave a brief history of Patrick and his experience.
Members Present: 31 members and 6 guests.
Pledge of Allegiance:
Hospitality: Robin C. (signed up to be a member), Chris L., Dan M., Rick and Janet N., Alex V.
Hostesses: Erika B., Jerrianne H., Dawn V.
Minutes: Minutes were distributed by e-mail and approved by the members.
Treasurer’s Report: Alice M. reported our bank balance as $5,667.44 after $600.00 was given to local food banks
Ways and Means: Pam W., chairing the event this year, encouraged everyone to continue to bring in items and/or plants for sale. The goal for this year is $250.00 – the total so far is $33.68. Pam W. brought in potted calla lilies, wallflowers and a Grecian prayer plant for sale; unsold plants will be kept until the May plant sale. Ways and Means will not take place in December but will resume in January 2008.
Unfinished Business: May Plant Sale – The date for the plant sale is May 3, 2008. The plant sale will be held in the Kingston Community Center again at a cost of $180.00. We are only going to rent one room next year. Linda M. said that now would be a good time to start dividing and repotting plants. Wednesday, November 28 was suggested as a date to start repotting. Linda has also graciously allowed us to take our potted plants to her house for the winter BUT they MUST be labeled. Put as much information as possible on the label - shade, sun, a vigorous grower, etc. When labeling the plants push the label with the name of the plant against the inside of the pot, this will allow the name to stay in tact and not be washed off with the rains. Members can also repot at Linda’s house; there are pots and soil for anyone to use. Suggested sources for inexpensive “end of season” plants are Sack’s, Home Depot and Wal-Mart. If you mention you are a member of the Kingston Garden Club it may also be possible to get a donation of free compost where the bag has been split. Some companies require evidence of the organization, i.e., letterhead – Bobbi W. is looking into creating an official letterhead. Linda M. passed around a sign-up sheet so members could volunteer for various jobs that will need to be done.
New Business: Announcement – The following members have stepped in for Diann while she is away:
December - Nancy M.
January - Wendy T.
February - Mary S.
Monthly Meetings – Pam W. reported that volunteers are needed to act as hostesses, the Design of the Day and for door prizes.
Chelsea Garden Show, England – May 16th through May 24th – Gwen W. mailed out an information sheet to members. The trip is running around $3,400.00 which includes hotels, transportation, meals and the entrance fee for the garden show. Gwen needs a $400.00 deposit from interested members as soon as possible. If you are interested please contact Gwen either by telephone or e-mail.
Clean-up – A great deal of discussion was held regarding weeding and general beautification of the downtown area. However, since this project would include other entities, Casteel Landscape company has been hired to spearhead this project. It was suggested that we table this discussion until further information is available. Pam W. already has a list of interested members willing to help with weeding and maybe planting.
Blanche Gray – Sharon N. suggested that children participating in this event could take their displays to the Kingston Farmers Market to show.
Holiday Party – Alice M. announced that she was collecting names and money for members wishing to attend the holiday party. If you did not get a chance to sign-up for this fun event, please contact Alice.
Show and Tell: Elaine J. brought in a pot of freshly cut rosemary and some old gardening magazines for members to take. Pam W. showed the Grecian prayer plant.
Door Prizes: Annika M., Debbie W.
Announcements: Wreath Making – Noel L. gave an overview of the annual wreath making at Bainbridge Gardens which will take place Thursday, December 6th 1.00-3.00. Contact Noel L. if you didn’t get a chance to sign up for this fun activity.
Holiday Craft Bazaar – Will be held at the Redeemer United Methodist Church Friday, November 30th 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and Saturday, December 1st 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Tip of the Day: Pam W. shared her tip for balling pieces of newspaper to put in the bottom of plant pots. This takes up room so the amount of soil can be cut down. The newspaper will also break down after a time and can be composted when plants are repotted.
Next Meeting: December 12, 2007 is the date for the annual holiday party to be held at Nancy M.’s house. This will be a pot luncheon commencing at 10:30 a.m. with entertainment from the group Reflections (who did such a wonderful job last year). Please also remember to bring in an unwrapped toy and non-perishable food for the local food banks. A volunteer will be needed to take the food to the food banks.
The meeting adjourned at: 12:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted, Dawn V.,
