MEETING MINUTES OCTOBER 16, 2006

 

 

Diann K. called our meeting to order at the Redeemer United Methodist Church at 9:35 am.

 

Members Present:           30 members, 2 guests

Minutes:                          September minutes approved as circulated. 

 

Treasurer’s report:          Alice M. reported our bank balance was $4,062.62

Unfinished Business:

1. Ann I. reported on the great success of the 2006 Blanche Gray shows and thanked all KGC volunteers for their help.

2.  Linda M. asked for committee chair sign-ups for the Plant Sale.  Date:  May 5, 2007She also reported on potting that happened thanks to Heidi of Dragonfly.  Heidi has red tags on plants that she is willing to donate.

3. Alice reported that money has been donated to the Kidney foundation in memory of Betty Morrison.

New Business:

1.  Teri M. has a list of those that have not received yearbooks.

2.  Discussion of revising the meeting format.

Motion:  The meeting format of the Kingston Garden Club shall be changed so that the speaker is at the beginning of the meeting and the business meeting will follow.  Seconded and amended.

Amendment:  The meeting format will be ordered to allow flexibility for the speaker convenience.  Seconded and passed.

3.  Sharon N. asked for ideas for Arbor Day.  Discussion followed

 

Design of the Day:          Carol M. presented a design of Halloween ceramics and dahlias

 

Show & Tell:                 1. Cathy M.      Fall Blooming clematis, Evergreen Rhodie with root weevil

                                       2.  Maxine H.  Calicarpa, 3 Hardy fuchsias (don’t prune until spring)

                                       3.  Elaine J.    Hydrangea, lace cap “silver blue” and lace cap “Weidner’s Pink”

                                                            Hebe, “Autumn Glory” and “Amy”, Kaffir Lily, Chocolate Cosmos

                                                            Pulmonaria “Lungwort”, Autumn Blue

Announcements:            

1.       The Christmas lunch will be December 13 at Nancy M’s.

2.       Carol H. announced that a propagator from Scotland would speak at the October Rhododendron Society Meeting.  She also mentioned an opportunity to propagate Rhodies this Sunday at a home on Bainbridge.

3.       Email change:  Carol M. 

4.       Cathy M. announced a Sunday Open house on Suquamish Way where people can walk through magnificent gardens.

 

Garden Tip:                   

1.       To protect Rhodies from root weevil, you can wrap the trunk bark with saran wrap and spread with Vaseline

2.       To preserve hydrangeas:  Either put in water almost over their head or put in a little water in a dark place.

 

November Meeting:        11/15/06:  Holiday Arrangements Jan Long, floral designer for Bloedel Reserve (last 15 years) will speak on "Let's Recycle” (note Blanche Gray connection) your garden into a Holiday Arrangement".  Jan will make 2 arrangements from native plant material.  One will be a prize for a KGC member with the lucky sign-in number. She will also give a demonstration of how to make Holiday potpourri
